GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
Upon completion of medical school training, each student enters into postgraduate training in the specialty of his/her choice through residency training. Aultman Hospital offers residencies in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, radiology and transitional year. These specialty training programs bring physicians with the most current medical knowledge into our patient-care teams. While the faculty provides guidance and supervision as these physicians continue to hone their clinical skills, the resident physicians enhance the medical staff's culture of excellence through ongoing discussions regarding medical advancements and the desire to understand the complexities of patient care and community health.
Ninety-five percent of the 2010 graduating residents in all disciplines passed specialty boards!
Twenty-seven residents graduated, having successfully accomplished all required competencies.
6 graduates were accepted into fellowship training
11 graduates employed as hospital physicians
3 graduates entered into private practice
1 graduate is a physician for the military
6 graduates joined group practices

FAMILY MEDICINE
The Aultman Family Medicine Residency is designed to train the family physician of the future through a well-designed and thoughtful educational program. Family medicine integrates the patients' physical, emotional and psychosocial health by individualizing the care for the health of the patient and family.
The residency is dually accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The ACGME site visit was held in August, 2007 and we received four years of continued accreditation. The AOA site visit was held in April, 2009 resulting in four years of continued accreditation.
The curriculum is designed to give residents expertise in caring for patients in the office, hospital and through the continuum of life cycles and disease processes. An emphasis on inpatient care in the first year transitions into a heavily outpatient-oriented experience in the third year with increasing responsibility of patient care of resident patient panels. Continuity of patient care is stressed in the Family Medicine Center as is behavioral medicine. We have incorporated increasing amounts of simulation and chronic disease care into our teaching models for patient care. For our osteopathic residents, the osteopathic philosophy and manipulative medicine are taught throughout the three years of training.
A strong emphasis has been placed on providing care to the community. Family Medicine residents and faculty are actively involved in the Stark County Health Department Prenatal Clinic, the Carroll County Health Department Women's Clinic, the Hartville Migrant Clinic, Planned Parenthood of Stark County and the McKinley Health Care Center.
Six residents graduated from the program in 2010, bringing the total number of graduates to 189. One of the graduates from this year stayed in the community to practice.
Electronic medical records was implemented at the Waynesburg and Hills & Dales sites. The electronic medical records will be implemented at the Aultman Physician Center in Spring, 2011.
OB/GYN
Aultman Hospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is getting ready for its internal review. Our complement is currently at 14 residents. We will be at full complement of 16 residents in 2012. We switched our resident semi-evaluation from MyEvaluations to Survey Monkey, which is more conducive to our needs. There will be duty hour changes for the next academic year, and we will have been reviewing night float on-call schedules to accommodate these changes. Dr. Hopkins is the Vice President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, providing national recognition to our hospital and program.
OSTEOPATHIC FAMILY MEDICINE
The Aultman/LECOM Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency is in its third year of competency-based training. The program was approved to start in 2007, after initiation of the Traditional Rotating Internship in 2006. To date, we have had three graduates from the program. Currently, we have four residents remaining in the OGME-2 and OGME-3 training levels. The program had its first visit in April, 2009. The program was given four years of approval. In 2012, the residency will revert to an allopathic only residency.
RADIOLOGY
The Aultman Radiology Residency is an integrated program with Mercy Medical Center and is a four-year program with four residents in each postgraduate year. Residents enter after having trained one year in a rotating general medicine internship such as our Transitional Year Residency.
Radiology residents continue to utilize the three-year lecture series that was formalized in nine subspecialty areas of radiology in compliance with RRC requirements. Curriculum additions include the purchase of the ACR web-based online teaching file and STAT DX. Radiology residents attend the Radiologic-Pathology Correlation Course (AIRP) sponsored by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This four week course replaces the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) previously attended by R-3 residents.
Recently, the Radiology Residency began recording conferences/lectures via webcast. The webcast allows residents unable to attend the lecture/conference the opportunity to view the information online at their convenience.
Voice recognition system, along with the RIS/PACS systems, continue to be used.
The web-based MyEvaluations.com is being utilized to track conference attendance, duty hour compliance, rotation evaluations, faculty and resident evaluations, on-call and rotation schedules, monthly conference schedule, annual program and faculty evaluations and resident self-assessment. Residents are required to maintain their portfolio using MyEvaluations.com.
The Radiology Residency is proud of the scholarly activities that have been accomplished this year. There were eight radiology presentations at the 22nd Annual Aultman Research Day. The complete list of activities is listed in the "Publications and Presentations" section of this report.
TRANSITIONAL
The Aultman Transitional Year prepares a resident to enter one of the several competitive subspecialty programs that require a broad-based clinical year.
Recent Transitional graduates have continued their training in the specialties of Radiology, Ophthalmology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Anesthesiology, and Radiation Oncology.
Each resident develops an individual Transitional Portfolio based on the ACGME's six clinical core competencies. Web-based tools such as MyEvaluations.com facilitate this, providing confidentiality and immediate access to feedback.
These four positions continue to be highly sought after and competitive as we accept applications each year through ERAS.

RESEARCH
Research is the medical community's method of exploring the frontiers of medical knowledge and skills. Aultman's physicians participate in research studies being conducted nationwide. These studies bring opportunities for treatments to our patients that would otherwise be unavailable. This dedication to new knowledge is evidence of our physicians' desire to continuously strive toward excellence. The journey continues through their inquiry. Aultman Hospital utilizes two Human Research Review Boards (HRRB) to advance these studies and to assure that patient-centered care is accomplished.
During the 2009-2010 academic year, the HRRB approved 30 new research studies. These research studies were submitted by the medical staff (21); the nursing staff (4); and residents (5).
Categories of Research at Aultman Health Foundation:
Clinical Investigations
